Monthly Competition Rules

1. Monthly competitions, held September through May, are limited to members in good standing. Members whose dues have not been paid prior to the September competition are barred from competing until such time as they are reinstated in good standing. (Dues may be paid the evening of the first competition.)

2. Each eligible member may enter the prescribed number of 2" x 2" slides/digital images in one of three groups. The Board of Directors will determine the number of slides/digital images at the beginning of each season. Slides which do not fit the club projector will not be judged.

3. Slides/digital images must have been taken by entrants within the last five years.

4.To be acceptable, slides must bear a title, name of the maker and be clearly spotted in the lower left hand corner as viewed. It is strongly recommended they be mounted in glass, plastic or cardboard.

5. Slides must be submitted in an Envelope. The envelope must be properly marked with the maker's name, slide titles, month of competition and competition class.(i.e;Salon, B, or C)

6. Slides may be submitted to the Competition Committee at any meeting prior to competition night, and are accepted up to 7:45 pm on competition night. Slides are to be picked up after the competition.

7. Digital images for competitions must be submitted via the internet to Photo Contest Pro at www.PhotoContestPro.com. Competition entries must be submitted by an explicit date as designated by the above service. This deadline date will be strictly observed by the software. Once this date has passed, the competition will no longer be available online. There will be no exceptions. Detailed instructions necessary for submissions are available on the club's website.

Please Note:
The competition software is now set to accept a maximum file size of 1152 pixels and a minimum of 768 pixels. What this means is that the largest dimension must be between 768 and 1152 pixles. If you get an error when trying to upload your images, please verify the size. If you use 768 for the height (our current instructions) then check the width and make sure it is no larger than 1152. If it is, then set the largest dimension to 1152 and let other dimension default to the correct size. If you continue to have problems, please let me (Bunny) know asap.

*TRADITIONAL: A traditional category of images that begin as photos and may include such enhancements (such as Levels, Curves, and the like) for the purpose of correction of color, tone, sharpness and contrast.

*NEW DIMENSIONS: A category of images, AS PRESENTED, that looks as if they could not have been taken with a camera alone. For example, but not limited to these examples: Images that are surrealistic, unreal, non-representational, abstract or fantasy including images that have been changed by posterization, special effects filters, sketching, painterly, pen and ink or in any other way. This category may also include images that are entirely computer generated.

8. In order for a slide/digital image to be eligible for club competition, it must be the work of the maker, excluding processing. Slides/digital images taken at club workshops are not eligible.
a) No slide or digital image may be placed in any club competition twice in the same club year regardless of any subsequent modification. It may be entered again in another club year provided it has not been awarded a ribbon.
b) Any slide or digital image which has won an Award or Honorable Mention in any club competition can never again be entered in any subsequent club competition.
c) Members are requested to avoid the use of near duplicates of the same subject in the same season.

NOTE: It is the individual member's responsibility, not the competition committee's, to keep written records necessary to comply with the rules.

9. There will be 9 competitions throughout the year. Any subject matter is acceptable for eight of the competitions, but a special topic will be assigned to one of the competitions. Our judges are instructed to judge slides/digital images from a pictorial viewpoint, including nature subjects, portraits, etc. To help insure a measure of success, the photographer’s creativity should be apparent.
SCORES; The eight regular and one assigned competitions will be totaled for one yearly score.

COMPETITIONS WITH ASSIGNED TOPICS CANNOT BE MADE UP.

10. There are three levels of competition

LEVEL C
Members with a basic level of experience.
New members who choose to start in this group provided they have less than 5 acceptances in PSA Dual Projection color salons (slides/digital images)

LEVEL B
Members who have, by the beginning of the season received 5 or more Dual Projection color salon acceptances
Members who were promoted from LEVEL C group
Members who on joining the club opt to be in this group

SALON LEVEL A
Members who, at the beginning of the season, have one star or higher rating in PSA Dual Projection color salons.
Members who were promoted from LEVEL B group. New members who on joining the club opt to be in this group.

NOTE: New members may elect to compete on any of the three levels they deem suitable to their photographic qualifications and abilities. However, if they hold 5 PSA acceptances in dual projection PSA color salons, they must compete on LEVEL B. If they hold PSA star rating, they must compete on the SALON level. Any member may opt to compete on a higher level but may not return to a lower level. Points accumulated on a lower level may not be credited to a higher level when a member transfers during a competition year.

11. Each slide/digital image will be evaluated by a judge and scored 1 to 10 points, in 1/2 point increments. The top 20 percent, to the nearest whole number of total slides/digital images on each level will be selected as winning slides/digital images. Of these, 50% are to be Honorable Mentions and 50% Awards. When the 20% calculation result in an odd number of honors, the number of Awards will be LESS than the Honorable Mentions.
Ribbons will be awarded. An additional 4 points will be given to an awards and 2 points for an Honorable Mention winner.

12. In the event a member unavoidably misses a single REGULAR monthly competition, the procedure for makeup is as follows: One (1) make-up slide/digital image, in addition to the regular number of slides/digital images permitted, to be entered in each of the next REGULAR competitions until the full complement of slides/digital images has been reached.eg. Assuming a club year of 8 regular and 1 special (assigned topic) competitions. A member missing competition # 3 would enter 4 slides/digital images in REGULAR competitions # 4, # 5 and # 6. A member missing competition # 6 would enter 2 make-up slides/digital images in REGULAR competition # 7 (a total of 5) and a single make-up in REGULAR competition # 8 (a total of 4). A member missing competition # 7 would be permitted to enter 6 slides/digital images in REGULAR competition # 8. Should a member miss competition # 8, there would be no make-up and he/she would receive a score of zero. Should a Special (assigned topic) competition fall within a make-up period, the make-up date coinciding with the Special competition date would be skipped and and carried forward to the next REGULAR competition.

NO MORE THAN ONE MONTH CAN BE MISSED AND MADE UP EXCEPT IF THE COMPETITION IS CANCELLED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER.

COMPETITIONS WITH ASSIGNED TOPICS MAY NOT BE MADE UP. THE MAKER WILL RECEIVE A ZERO SCORE FOR THE NIGHT.

13. At the end of the competition season, medals will be awarded respectively to first, second and third places on each level. In the event of a tie, duplicate awards will be made.

14. The high scores in C and B groups will automatically be promoted to the next higher group. Second and third place may be promoted at the discretion of the Board.

Slide of the Year Competition

Slide of the Year awards will be given (first, second and third place) on each level. All Award and Honorable Mention slides/digital images from the monthly competitions are eligible to be entered in their respective levels for the Year End Honors.
